This trade musket features a 1650s-style French lock.
The barrel is an antique Civil War-era .58 cal. smoothbore musket barrel. It’s 34 inches long and is octagon to round.
After removing all rust and imperfections, I relined the barrel with a 4130 Chromoly bore liner, then installed a vent liner to seal between the barrel and barrel liner.
The bore measures .490. TOTW sells 6 different sizes of round balls, .45 to .48 cal. However, I’ll call it a .45 cal. smoothbore.
The lock was completed from ‘Antique Gun Parts Castings/Chris Hirsch’, ‘Early French Flint Lock’.
The castings are well-made. The lock has a fast throw, strong springs, and throws a shower of sparks. The lock is held in place with 3 lock bolts.
The front sight is a Silver running horse head, soldered front sight.
The stock is an excellent Cherry. IMHO, the knot in the forearm gives the musket character. The area is solid and makes this Trade Gun very unique.
The Trade Gun has 2 brass forward thimbles and a stripped ramrod.
The Traditional Serpent Side Plate is brass, as is the Butt Plate, which is installed with handmade iron nails.
The musket has an iron wide bow trigger guard with a longer trigger designed to be large enough to fit a gloved hand.
(Not pictured) I added a small rear sight just forward of the lock panel.
I bore-sighted this musket at 50 yards with a laser bore sighter. I then tweaked the windage with 3 shots of .440 round ball pushed by 50gr. Goex FFFg Powder and a .020 oiled patch.
As far as windage goes, she’s right on. For me, she shot about 6″ low. However, you’ll have to sight her in for the way you shoot.
With its fast throw, light weight, and easy trigger pull, this gun will also be great with an ounce of lead shot.
At 6.5 pounds and a 14-inch (LOP) length of pull, this is an excellent gun for a teen, a wife, or a light-weight gun for anything up to deer-sized game.
