This early style of rifle has been popular ever since it was introduced it was introduced by the German immigrants who settled in the new Colonies. Some were trained and experience gunsmiths familiar with building beautiful hunting rifles for their Baron land owners. These are no nonsense tools developed to take down large game. In the early days, Colonial America had plenty of big ones. Bison, Elk, Bear, deer, and wolves were plentiful and needed a serious gun to take them down.
The Jaeger rifle was the answer. It was very sturdy, accurate, easy to handle and reliable. The shorter barrel made it manageable in thick woods. The fact that it was swamped made the point of balance right on the left hand holding it, and the rifling made it a tack driver.
